What is Dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects a person's ability to understand numbers and quantities, often described as 'number sense.' It affects how the brain processes numerical concepts, making basic calculations and problem-solving with numbers challenging. Although dyscalculia is a persistent difficulty, early identification and support can help children develop a sense of number, build mathematical understanding and grow in confidence.

Number sense skills of subitising, estimating and comparing numbers do not always come naturally to children with dyscalculia. Therefore my programmes for children with dyscalculia are rooted in developing a sense of number and use multi-sensory tools and visual models to bring meaning to numbers.

Maths Learning Difficulties

Not all maths difficulties are caused by dyscalculia. Maths difficulties can also arise from maths anxiety, working memory and processing difficulties, or other neurodiverse conditions such as dyslexia or ADHD. Whatever the cause of the difficulty, my approach of personlised, structured maths support is key to building confidence and developing lasting understanding.
